We are looking for a development-oriented and service-minded

R&D Engineer (Finland / Espoo, Otaniemi)

One of the contributing elements to the difficulties faced in the building sector is the world’s population growth and desire for urbanisation. Based on the rising infrastructure development, which is still a cause of the depletion of the material resources, there is an exponential rise in the demand for concrete and its component materials. The overexploitation of numerous natural aggregate deposits, including those in rivers and mountains, has led to pollution and a decline in biodiversity. In addition, the manufacturing of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), the primary binder in traditional concrete, accounts for around 7% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. However, the high temperature needed for the calcination of raw materials and additional CO2 created during cement manufacture are what cause the emission.

Concrete is the second most consumed material, and concrete production has a high carbon footprint. Some ways to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete include using waste such as fly ash and slag as supplementary cementitious materials (SCM). This will reduce the amount of cement, which is a crucial contributor to the carbon footprint of concrete. Research focuses on studying the possibilities of using different industrial side streams as a raw material in alkali activation technology, including:

  • testing of alkali-activated concrete properties
  • optimisation of alkali-activated concrete materials formulations
  • troubleshooting of production quality challenges, and
  • advising on new available technologies

You will carry out independent research in the supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) and concrete space. More specifically, this will involve you to be a part of the planning, execution, and reporting of research and development projects. In addition, you will be responsible for analysing different industrial side streams as the main raw material in alkali-activated solutions.

We prefer the following personal attributes:

  • Sound project management skills with an ability to reliably scope new projects and ensure delivery of complex projects possessing significant uncertainty
  • Good interpersonal skills with self-driven, good collaboration and teamworking skills
  • Good communication skills, oral and written, and able to pitch the message appropriately to different audiences
  • Problem-solving ability and resourcefulness with an ability to resolve issues and manage risk
  • Good planning and organisational skills, also under pressure

We are committed to conducting business with honesty and integrity. At the heart of Betolar are visionary thinking, a high level of expertise in construction, and a deep understanding of the opportunities offered by technology and digitalisation. We work with purpose and, it is fair to say, us Betolarians feel that we have a mission beyond our own ambitions! Courage for innovation, opportunities and people, responsibility towards environment and humanity, working together with friendly behaviour and mutual respect are our core values.

We offer you a position where you will work in a team consisting of ambitious colleagues along with top international industry experts and researchers. While we are on a exciting path of dynamic growth, we never forget that at the heart of our success are our happy and healthy employees. Hence low hierarchy, excellent healthcare, hybrid-working, extensive group accident insurance, the possibility for individual and team coaching, and well-being benefits are at your use!

You can leave a footprint on our unique journey towards something great in disrupting industries with green solutions.
